The heatwave currently gripping the country, expected to bring record-breaking May temperatures of up to 34C, will suddenly disappear on a key date, according to new weather maps. The UK recorded its hottest day of the year so far on Saturday, when the village of Frittenden in Kent hit 30.5C. The Met Office has predicted even higher temperatures on Sunday and Monday, with potential peaks of between 33C and 34C.

The unusually warm late-spring weather won’t last forever, however, and it could conclude with an abrupt drop in the mercury of around 17C, forecasts from WXCharts suggest. While the heatwave is likely to peak over the weekend, temperatures could remain in the high twenties over the coming week, rounding out the month with continuous warm and sunny weather.

The tide may begin to turn on Sunday, May 31, however, when the mercury begins sliding towards the mid-teens, before plummeting to around 13C in southern England on Monday, June 1.

Weather maps show cooler air enveloping the country on the evening of May 31, before continuing a descent into unsettled and cool conditions throughout June 1.

Forecasts for Monday lunchtime show nowhere in the UK recording temperatures of above 15C, with the majority of regions between 7C and 13C.

The temperature change could be accompanied by a band of rain moving across western England, with maps showing most of the southwest coast and Wales set for downpours on the first day of the month.

The Met Office‘s long-range forecast also suggests a shift in weather patterns heading into June. It says: “Heading into June, more in the way of cloud is possible, perhaps accompanied by some rain and showers at times, though still a lot of warm and dry weather in between.”
