Prince William and Princess Kate are taking a much different approach to the spotlight than Harry and Meghan, says one royal commentator. While the latter’s return to the UK has been shrouded in drama since it happened back in August, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor continues to struggle with the law, while Earl Charles Spencer brings old wounds to light with the release of his Diana book. Being directly in the line of succession, one might assume that William would be at the centre of a lot of this drama. Instead, the Prince and Princess of Wales have managed to stay above it all. According to the Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers, the senior royals are doing so with a smile.
On this week’s episode of Pod Save the King, Myers revealed that William and Kate are keeping things light, with smily public engagements that make no mention of the personal beef between them and the Sussexes, or any other drama surrounding royal figures.
“What William and Catherine are doing is not only putting their best foot forward, but actually enjoying the job. It doesn’t need to be so heavy all the time,” Myers said.
“They’re not going to speak about Harry and Meghan, they’re not going to speak about Andrew’s court case, they just want to get on with life and have a bit of fun along the way.”

During the conversation, The Mirror’s deputy royal editor Jennifer Newton echoed this and said that there is no need for the Prince and Princess of Wales to issue formal statements about drama that they are not involved with. “And is this not the best way to say something without saying anything at all?” she said.
“Just getting on with it and having fun. They don’t have to put out any statements when these appearances do all the talking.”

Prince William is remaining positive during his engagements, despite the bitter rift that is reportedly still there between him and his younger brother. William is reportedly furious that Harry is producing a documentary about their late mother, Princess Diana.
It is understood that William was offered opportunities to do similar projects but turned them all down. Meanwhile, it’s understood that the brothers have not seen each other since Harry returned to the UK late this summer.
Despite this, neither William nor Kate has addressed this in public. Recently, the couple went to Northern Ireland on a visit aimed at combatting homelessness. They travelled to Belfast to visit two projects connected with the future king’s Homewards initiative, which aims to make homelessness “rare, brief and unrepeated”, and their visit has been praised by royal fans online.
The One Thing Prince William and Kate Do That Truly Sets Them Apart From Harry and Meghan
Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, have adopted a noticeably different approach to public life from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, according to royal commentators. While the two couples continue to attract intense media attention, William and Kate have largely avoided commenting publicly on the family tensions surrounding the Sussexes, instead concentrating on their official engagements, charitable causes and responsibilities within the monarchy.
That distinction has become particularly visible following renewed attention surrounding Harry and Meghan’s return to the United Kingdom and the continuing distance between the two royal couples. According to royal editor Russell Myers, William and Kate are focused on their own responsibilities rather than treating the Sussexes’ activities as a competition. <Cite refs={[“turn859636search1″,”turn859636search0”]}/>
The central difference, therefore, is not simply about who appears in public more frequently or who attracts the most headlines. It is about the roles each couple has chosen to occupy and the way they manage their relationship with the institution of the monarchy.
1. William and Kate Keep Their Focus on Royal Duty
The defining feature of William and Kate’s approach is their continued commitment to their official roles as the Prince and Princess of Wales.
As senior working royals, they represent the monarchy at public events, support charitable organisations and undertake engagements connected to issues such as mental health, early childhood development, environmental protection and community welfare.
Their work often involves visiting organisations, meeting volunteers, listening to people affected by social problems and drawing attention to projects that might otherwise receive less public recognition.
On October 14, 2026, William visited young scholars and alumni of The Amos Bursary in east London to mark Black History Month in the UK. The organisation supports young people of African and Caribbean heritage through mentoring, financial assistance and leadership development. The engagement was one example of William using his public position to highlight educational opportunity and social mobility. <Cite refs={[“turn859636news24”]}/>
Such appearances may not always generate the same level of international attention as a royal controversy, but they form part of the routine work expected of senior members of the Royal Family.
Kate has similarly continued undertaking public engagements focused on community organisations and social causes. The couple’s approach has frequently involved returning attention to the organisations they visit rather than making public statements about disagreements within their family.
For royal commentators, this consistency is the key distinction. William and Kate have an established institutional role, and their public responsibilities continue regardless of the latest speculation about Harry and Meghan.
2. They Avoid Turning the Family Rift Into a Public Contest
The relationship between William and Harry has deteriorated over several years. Harry’s departure from royal duties, his interviews, his memoir and his public comments about life within the Royal Family have all contributed to continuing scrutiny of the brothers’ relationship.
The situation has also affected how the public interprets appearances by the two couples. An ordinary engagement by William and Kate can become part of a wider narrative about the royal rift, even when the event has no direct connection to Harry or Meghan.
Yet the Prince and Princess of Wales have generally continued their scheduled work without responding publicly to every development involving the Sussexes.
Royal commentators have described this as an effort to avoid treating the couples’ activities as a competition. That interpretation is based partly on their public conduct; it does not provide direct evidence of their private feelings or intentions.
The distinction matters because silence can easily be interpreted in different ways. Some observers see it as restraint, while others may view it as a sign that reconciliation remains distant. Without direct statements, it is difficult to establish precisely what William and Kate privately think about each new development.
What can be observed is that they have continued to carry out official duties while the family dispute remains a subject of public interest.
For a monarchy that relies partly on continuity and public confidence, maintaining a predictable programme of work can help prevent private disagreements from dominating every public appearance.
3. Harry and Meghan Have Chosen a Different Path
Harry and Meghan stepped back from their roles as working royals in 2020 and subsequently established a life centred on independent projects, charitable work and commercial activities.
Their decision changed the nature of their relationship with the institution. Rather than undertaking official duties on behalf of the King, they have pursued projects through their own organisations and business ventures.
Harry has continued to work on issues including veterans’ welfare, mental health and the Invictus Games, which supports wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans through sport and recovery. Meghan has developed lifestyle projects and her As Ever brand alongside other charitable and media activities.
Their work is not equivalent to the official duties performed by William and Kate, because the couples occupy different positions within the royal structure. Harry and Meghan can choose projects as private individuals, while William and Kate have formal responsibilities as senior working royals.
The distinction was reinforced in a statement from the Royal Household in September 2026, which confirmed that Harry and Meghan had not resumed official royal roles despite their renewed presence in the UK. Their charitable activities remain private matters rather than state or royal duties. <Cite refs={[“turn859636search6”]}/>
This does not mean that the Sussexes have abandoned public service. Instead, they have pursued it through a different model, one that allows them to select their own causes and operate outside the official working-royal structure.
The two approaches are therefore difficult to compare directly. One is tied to the formal duties of the monarchy; the other combines independent philanthropy, advocacy and commercial work.
4. Public Engagements Versus Celebrity Attention
Another difference frequently discussed by royal commentators is the way the couples’ public appearances are presented.
William and Kate’s engagements generally take place within an official schedule. They may visit schools, hospitals, community projects, charities or international events as representatives of the monarchy.
Harry and Meghan’s appearances, meanwhile, often combine charitable activity with the wider public profile they have developed since leaving royal duties. Their projects may involve interviews, documentaries, public campaigns, commercial launches or visits organised through their own networks.
That difference can influence the way media outlets report their activities. An appearance by William and Kate may be framed around the organisation they are supporting, while an appearance by Harry and Meghan may attract additional attention because of their relationship with the Royal Family.
However, it would be too simplistic to suggest that one couple cares about public service while the other is interested only in celebrity. Both have supported charitable causes, although their methods, responsibilities and public presentation differ.
The more useful distinction is institutional: William and Kate carry out work connected to their formal positions, while Harry and Meghan have greater independence in choosing how to structure their public lives.
The media environment also plays a role. Every interaction, photograph or social-media post involving either couple can become part of the continuing debate about their relationship with the monarchy.
5. Their Public Work Has Continued Through Difficult Periods
William and Kate have also faced difficult personal circumstances while maintaining their public roles.
In 2024, Kate announced that she was undergoing treatment for cancer. William subsequently spoke about the challenges facing his family, while Kate gradually returned to public engagements.
During this period, the couple’s responsibilities did not disappear, although their schedule and visibility changed. Their return to public duties has since attracted attention as they continue to support charitable causes and represent the monarchy.
The experience illustrates that maintaining a public role does not mean a person has no private difficulties. Nor does a quieter public profile necessarily mean that someone is avoiding responsibility.
Royal life involves competing demands: family responsibilities, personal privacy, institutional expectations and the pressure of constant media attention. How those demands are balanced can differ considerably between individuals.
William and Kate’s public approach has emphasised continuing with their formal responsibilities when circumstances permit, while limiting public discussion of family matters. That pattern is visible, although the reasons behind each private decision cannot be established solely from public appearances.
6. Does Staying Quiet Help the Monarchy?
The monarchy depends on more than the popularity of individual family members. It also relies on continuity, public engagements, charitable connections and the ability to carry out constitutional and ceremonial responsibilities.
For William, who is first in line to the throne, developing experience in these areas is particularly important. His role includes preparing for future responsibilities while undertaking work on behalf of the current monarch.
Kate’s position similarly involves supporting the Prince of Wales, developing her own charitable priorities and representing the Royal Family at official events.
Avoiding public arguments about family disagreements can help keep attention on those responsibilities. It may also reduce the risk of every disagreement becoming a new public dispute.
Nevertheless, silence is not a guaranteed solution to a family rift. It does not necessarily repair relationships, resolve disagreements or answer questions about past events. It simply means that the people involved are not choosing to address every issue publicly.
For Harry and Meghan, speaking openly about their experiences has been part of their decision to build an independent public identity. Their supporters may view that openness as necessary, while critics may argue that public disclosures make reconciliation more difficult.
Both interpretations exist within a highly contested debate, and neither should be treated as proof of what the couples privately intend.
7. The Future of the Royal Relationship Remains Uncertain
The relationship between the two couples continues to attract attention because it combines family tensions with a fundamental change in royal roles.
Harry has spoken about wanting to improve his relationship with members of his family, but reports in October 2026 indicate that the relationship with William remains strained. There has been no public confirmation of a reconciliation between the brothers. <Cite refs={[“turn859636news28″,”turn859636news29”]}/>
The return of Harry and Meghan to the UK has therefore not automatically restored their former positions within the monarchy. Their presence in the country, their charitable engagements and their personal relationships with family members are separate matters.
William and Kate, meanwhile, continue to carry out official work. Their approach suggests that, whatever the private state of the relationship, they are not making a public reconciliation the centre of their official schedule.
Whether the brothers eventually rebuild their relationship remains uncertain. Any lasting reconciliation would depend on private conversations and decisions that outsiders cannot reliably predict.
The One Thing That Sets William and Kate Apart
Ultimately, the clearest distinction between William and Kate and Harry and Meghan is their relationship with the institution of the monarchy.
William and Kate continue to carry out formal royal duties and generally keep the family dispute out of their public engagements. Harry and Meghan, having stepped back from working-royal roles, have built an independent life that combines charitable work, advocacy and commercial projects.
That difference shapes their schedules, the way their appearances are reported and the expectations placed upon them.
It does not, by itself, prove that one couple is more sincere, more dedicated or more deserving of public support than the other. Those are judgments that cannot be established simply by comparing their roles.
What is clear is that William and Kate have continued their official programme without publicly engaging in every new chapter of the dispute, while Harry and Meghan have developed a separate public identity outside the working Royal Family.
As scrutiny continues, their contrasting approaches will remain a subject of discussion. But the most meaningful comparison is not about who attracts the biggest headline. It is about the different responsibilities each couple has chosen, or is required, to fulfil—and how those choices shape their place in modern royal life.
