The Metropolitan Police has referred itself to the police watchdog over the Thomas Markle probe. Britain’s biggest police force admitted it received a letter detailing allegations against the Duchess of Sussex’s father. But officers did not pass it on to law enforcement agencies overseas. The Duchess was made aware of allegations about her father in 2019, when Roslyn Loveless, Mr Markle’s first wife, wrote to the Scotland Yard.
Scotland Yard said in a statement: “The author of the letter suggested they were writing to raise concerns relating to the security of the Duchess of Sussex. While the letter did not actually contain any information specifically related to security matters, it did contain a number of claims about alleged offending outside the United Kingdom. The letter was assessed and subsequently passed to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their awareness. The details of the allegations in the letter were not shared with other law enforcement agencies.”
The statement continued: “In recent days, the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has carried out an initial review into our actions following receipt of the letter in 2019.
“Following that review, a voluntary referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in respect of the decision not to inform other law enforcement agencies, and the decision to pass the letter to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
“In addition, it is our intention to make a number of referrals to relevant overseas law enforcement agencies in relation to the allegations contained within the letter. That process is underway and will be completed in the coming days.”
Four boxes of material said to belong to Mr Markle, 82, were handed to police by his son, Thomas Markle Jr.
The boxes are understood to contain mobile phones, hard drives, dismantled computers and other devices and personal effects allegedly left behind by Mr Markle Sr when he moved back to the US in May.
Markle has denied all allegations against him.
In a statement on Friday, Meghan said she was informed about “disturbing allegations” about her father in 2018 and that she hopes people will now understand why she distanced herself from him.
She said: “I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed. In 2018, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection. That letter was subsequently shared with me.
“It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father and I was given assurances that these were being investigated.
“I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them. I trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families.
“Although the breadth of what has now been uncovered is more sickening than one could ever imagine, my sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served and that the priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children.”
Police Issue Huge Update on Probe into Meghan Markle’s Father
Police investigating allegations involving Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan Markle, have issued a significant update, bringing renewed attention to a case that has attracted international interest. The investigation has also raised questions about the handling of earlier warnings by British police and the responsibilities of authorities across several countries.
The controversy began after Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan’s half-brother, reportedly discovered material among his father’s belongings at his former home in the Philippines. He subsequently contacted authorities, raising allegations that Thomas Markle Sr. possessed child sexual abuse images. The claims prompted an investigation by Philippine authorities.
Thomas Markle, who is 82, has strongly denied the accusations, describing them as false and deeply distressing. He has insisted that he would never harm a child and has rejected the allegations made against him.
The latest development concerns the examination of electronic devices and other materials reportedly handed to investigators. Philippine police have obtained a court warrant allowing them to examine the digital evidence. Some devices have also been sent to Manila for specialist analysis.
Authorities are expected to establish whether the material contains illegal images and whether there is sufficient evidence to support further legal action. Prosecutors have indicated that any evidence will be assessed carefully and objectively.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police in London has found itself facing a separate investigation over its handling of an earlier warning concerning Thomas Markle.
The force confirmed that it received a letter in January 2019 containing allegations of offending outside the United Kingdom. Rather than forwarding the information to relevant overseas law enforcement agencies, officers decided to pass the letter to the office of Prince Harry and Meghan for their awareness.
The Metropolitan Police has since referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which confirmed that it would conduct an independent investigation into the force’s failure to share the allegations with relevant authorities at the time.
The watchdog will examine why the information was not passed on and whether the decisions made by officers were appropriate.
The Metropolitan Police has also announced that it intends to refer the allegations contained in the letter to relevant overseas authorities.
Meghan has previously spoken publicly about the situation, saying she was deeply distressed by the allegations concerning her father. She explained that she had received troubling information years earlier and had been given assurances that the matter was being investigated.
The Duchess of Sussex has also explained that her decision to maintain distance from her father was connected to concerns about protecting her children.
The situation has become even more complicated following reports that additional material was discovered in a storage unit in Mexico previously rented by Thomas Markle. The allegations surrounding that discovery have also attracted the attention of the FBI, which has confirmed that it is aware of the case and may provide assistance to Philippine authorities where appropriate.
Thomas Markle has also reportedly moved to a specialist care facility in Florida following serious health difficulties. His current circumstances could create additional challenges for investigators seeking to question him.
Despite the growing attention, it is important to remember that the allegations have not been proven. Thomas Markle remains entitled to the presumption of innocence while the investigation continues.
The case has now developed into an international matter involving police authorities in the Philippines, the United Kingdom and the United States. Each organisation has different responsibilities, making cooperation essential if investigators are to establish the facts.
Ultimately, the investigation raises serious questions about the handling of alleged offences, the protection of potential victims and the importance of communication between international law enforcement agencies. For Meghan Markle and her family, the situation has also brought renewed attention to a deeply personal relationship that has remained strained for years.
As investigators continue examining the evidence, the public will be waiting for further updates. The priority must remain establishing the truth, protecting anyone who may have been harmed and ensuring that any legal proceedings are conducted fairly and transparently.
