The presenter has spoken out about the murder probe.

Ann Widdecombe: Man ‘left house linked to murder with stick’

Piers Morgan has voiced confusion over the timeline of events surrounding Ann Widdecombe‘s murder. The former Conservative minister, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor, Dartmoor at around 11:40am on Thursday (July 9), having sustained serious injuries. A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, however, Devon and Cornwall police confirmed he was no longer part of the investigation and was subsequently released.

On Saturday (July 11), the police announced that a 28-year-old white British man had been arrested on suspicion of murder in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The man is believed to have driven almost 300 miles to Widdecombe’s Dartmoor home with a “wooden stick” on the morning of her death. As police work to piece together the events leading up to the former politician’s murder, Morgan, 61, has spoken out to voice his confusion over the case.

Rest in Peace Ann, you did not deserve this, you were never afraid to speak your mind and often saying what most people were thinking. You are a heroine to all girls and someone to look up to. God Bless you, and may you rest in peace.

A feisty lady who stuck by her convictions and was an inspiration to so many of us. She never deserved to die in such a heinous manner. Honest, true women with such deep faith and sense of morality, like Anne, are hard to find. She will be missed by so many. RIP Anne

A unique powerhouse with a great sense of humour & the ability to laugh at herself, She stuck to her principles & stood up for many. I hope that as a frail elderly lady she was taken by surprise, rendered immediately unconscious and didn’t suffer A great example to everyone, sorely missed R.I.P

Ann, you were everything that used to be considered the norm here in GB. Firm, fair and courteous. Looking at those comments by some left wingers, filled with hate, shows how far we’ve fallen in recent years. You will be missed.

“None of this Ann Widdecombe story makes any sense,” he wrote on X.

Devon and Cornwall Police assistant chief constable, Matt Longman said detectives remain “open-minded” about the motive, saying there is no evidence to suggest that Widdecombe’s murder was politically motivated or terrorism-related.

He said: “At this point, there is still no information to suggest that this is a terrorism-related incident, and at this point we are not looking at anyone else in connection with this murder.

“Detectives remain open-minded about the potential motive. At this stage there is nothing to suggest it was politically motivated.”

Concerns about Widdecombe’s welfare were first raised when she failed to appear on Matt Allwright’s show at 1pm on Wednesday.

ITV News reported Widdecombe had spoken to a researcher on the Channel 5 show on the same day to set up an interview, exchanging messages just after 12pm.

Her last message was received at 12.19pm on Wednesday. The researcher messaged again at 12:48pm requesting that she join the Zoom link in preparation for the interview, but Widdecombe did not reply. Subsequent voice calls and messages went unanswered.

Her body was found “covered in blood” nearly 24 hours later.

By Friday, (July 10), police announced that Widdecombe had likely been killed and launched a murder investigation.

The 28-year-old man was arrested at an address in South Yorkshire, which was approximately 270 miles (430km) from Widdecombe’s Devon property.
