Why won’t ‘bottler Burnham’ go to the people? It makes me laugh when the wokerati press slags off Nigel Farage for wasting taxpayers’ money on Thursday’s Clacton by-election. Where was the same uproar when their boy Andy Burnham triggered an unnecessary by-election in Manchester, which cost the taxpayer an equivalent amount of money? Biased, much? At least Farage had the guts to put his case to the people following the witch hunt against him.
But, unlike the Reform boss, the newly coronated PM won’t make his case to the people with a general election. Yeah yeah, I know YouGov has Labour two points ahead in its latest poll. The chattering classes are all cackling over Labour’s roughly two to three-point lead over Reform following Burnham’s coronation and gimmicky giveaways, coupled with blanket coverage of the Farage fishing expedition.
So, come on then, Prime Minister: call the election. If Labour is so going to win and Reform has so obviously peaked, prove it! What are you waiting for? An invitation?
Or could it be that bottler Burnham knows this bounce is likely nothing more than a damp squib? Things won’t get better for the PM after John Healey’s tax-raising October Budget!
Yes, I know, we live in a parliamentary system and we vote for the party and not the leader! Bit of fiction though, isn’t it? Truth be told, if the PM genuinely believed he would win – even with a few seat losses – he’d go for it.
He would want to get out from under his predecessor’s manifesto with all its spending constraints. After all, if Burnham is really going to stick to Starmer’s manifesto then why bother ousting Sir Keir in the first place?
If, however, Burnham is going to go beyond that 2024 manifesto then all this hooey about ‘we vote for the party and not the leader’ gets blown right out of the water.
Are we supposed to believe this regicide was about nothing more than “vibes” and that Burnham will actually stick to the 2024 manifesto whereas Starmer was the one who actually betrayed it? Do us a favour!
So go on then, Andy! One assumes your cost-of-living giveaways and magical mystery tour across the land is leading somewhere. If then you are so sure of yourself, and if Farage is such a busted flush, pull the trigger! In the words of one famous sport brand: just do it!
