A major restaurant chain is closing down its 106 UK venues for good, as announced to customers. Beefeater will shut its doors and leave the restaurant scene on September 10. Beefeater reward club members received a letter, seen by the Southend Echo, that said: “As you may have seen, we have recently announced changes to our business, which is resulting in the closure of our Branded Restaurants. This means that on Thursday 10 September 2026 your local Beefeater and all other UK Beefeaters will close.”

It is understood the closure is part of owner Whitbread’s restructure. Withbread is pushing forward with a five-year growth plan which has seen it shift away from the group’s branded restaurants.

As a result, the group said in April that it would shut its remaining Beefeater and Brewers Fayre restaurants as part of a restructuring which would hit around 3,800 jobs.

Bosses said the firm is “executing each element” of the growth strategy “at pace” to help focus on its hotel operations.

Beefeater’s website says that “since 1974, Beefeater has been serving up the best of British steakhouse classics, perfectly grilled steaksand great family favourites like fish and chips, juicy burgers and much much more.”

It is also understood Whitbread, which also owns Premier Inn, is set to replace its 197 restaurants with an integrated food and drink model, which it said was more efficient and preferred by Premier Inn guests, as reported by the Southend Echo.
