Harry just proved how out of touch he is with one move – Brits are rolling their eyes

A self-serving comeback will never wash with a betrayed nation, argues Emily Wright.

Prince Harry clearly believes the British public suffers from collective amnesia. Looking straight down the camera lens in a glossy new video interview for GQ, the Duke of Sussex dropped what he thought was an endearing revelation about his family’s future. What he actually revealed is just how completely detached from reality he has become. With an earnest look and a casual tone, Harry let slip that moving his family back to England and enrolling Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet in British schools “meant a lot” to him.

You could practically hear the collective eye-roll echo from Land’s End to John O’ Groats. For the better part of six years, Harry treated the UK like a toxic backwater he was desperate to escape.

We were forced to endure a relentless barrage of televised grievances, multi-million-pound tell-all memoirs and tearful interviews lamenting the cold, hostile reality of life on our shores. California, we were told, was the promised land of freedom, peace and enlightened modern living. Yet now, the moment it suits him, the script flips.

Having quietly returned to British soil in August with Meghan and enrolled the children in our schools, Harry clearly assumes water is under the bridge. He appears on screen to wax lyrical about what coming home “meant” to him, expecting the nation to smile, nod and pretend the past six years never happened.

It is staggering how little he understands the people he left behind.

You do not get to spend half a decade hurling accusations across the Atlantic, pocketing millions for trading royal secrets and then waltz back into British life as if it were all just a minor misunderstanding. Ordinary Brits stood by the royals, and they won’t welcome back a part-time prince who only uses Britain when it suits his brand.

While the Sussexes nursed grievances, the British public got on with reality. Hardworking taxpayers weathered a brutal cost-of-living crisis. Millions watched with quiet respect as King Charles and the Prince and Princess of Wales carried out their duties with stoic dignity, putting public service first even as they confronted their own severe health battles.

That quiet commitment is the essence of public duty. It is what Britain values above all else.

Harry, meanwhile, seems to view his homeland as an airport transit lounge – somewhere to retreat to for an injection of royal heritage and top-tier schooling now that the Hollywood bubble has deflated. He expects the public to forget every insult, every book chapter and every television soundbite simply because he is physically back in the country. It won’t wash.

Two innocent children deserve a stable education without controversy, and no one denies them that. But do not insult our intelligence by posing for international media, acting as though a return to the motherland is some heroic olive branch.

Being in Britain does not mean being forgiven. You cannot spend six years torching bridges and expect a smooth crossing the moment you change your mind. The trust is gone, the embers are still smoking, and Harry has a mountain of work to do if he ever hopes to rebuild what he burnt down.
