GB News was halted for a breaking news report as it went to Cannock via video feed to get the latest on the protests against accommodation housing migrants in the town. This is another blow to Keir Starmer, who is facing increasing pressure over the rising numbers of migrants arriving in the UK over the last year. Reporter Steven Bennett said to the camera over a breaking news banner on the screen: “You’ve just joined us as we have walked from the centre to the hotel. 55 rooms in this hotel have been give to migrants, you will now see the opposing protesters, Stand Up To Racism, have just arrived in the last few minutes.

“We have approached them for comment and we are yet to hear from that side of the protest.” He was then joined by Dana, a protester who is a mother of two.

Dana shared her fears about the safety of her two young daughters with so many migrants staying in the nearby hotel. She said: “I’ve got two young girls and I don’t want them being looked at and targeted.

“I’m constantly looking around seeing who is around, wondering if someone is going to approach me because I’m a mother with two girls. It’s not right.”

Dana added that she feels that certain behaviours are considered acceptable in other cultures but not in Britain.

She raged: “If they’re going to come here they should be in a detention centre, not somewhere they get all these privileges.

“They’re not paying for anything, we’re paying for everything. They’re coming from countries that are fine. They don’t need help, they’re not war countries.”

Anti-migrant demonstrations at hotels used to house asylum seekers are taking place around the Midlands, with locations in Wolverhampton, Sutton Coldfield and Solihull seeing protesters outside the venues.

The protests come after government figures confirmed that 8,828 asylum seekers were residing in West Midlands accommodation as of March 2025. This marks a dramatic increase of approximately 5,000 since December 2024, making the number of migrants represent 0.5 per cent of the area’s residents.
