A once picturesque tourist hotspot has been overrun by yobs destroying the town, urinating on beach huts and blasting loud music. Residents in Bournemouth are now at breaking point after their formerly beautiful home has become a haven for crime, drug deals and antisocial behaviour.

The coastal resort town in the south west of England has historically been a staycation spot for Brits wanting a weekend getaway to the seaside. But the town’s deputy mayor has likened the area to a “tip”, calling for a major tidy up of Bournemouth for both locals and tourists to enjoy again. Last year, an attempt to attract residents back to the town centre saw the opening of an Ivy restaurant – a high-end chain. However, the establishment failed to deter the youths, who used a public phone box, just meters away, as a makeshift toilet.

Outgoing deputy mayor Anne Filer labelled the once-thriving resort as a “tip” due to the broken park benches, graffiti and failure to maintain the bushes and plants.

“All I want is for the town to look clean and tidy again for both the locals and all the tourists who come here,” she told MailOnline.

“So many of the fences along the cliff are broken, there is graffiti everywhere, plants and bushes are overgrown, verges need trimming back.

“We have to acknowledge that people like coming here but it looks like a tip.”

Local resident Chris Shetler expressed how, despite the Ivy being a nice respite from the chaos caused by yobs, “it’s not going to change anything”.

He said: “So many smaller businesses are shutting up shop because they just can’t afford to stay open and that puts more people on the streets which just makes everything worse.”

A third furious Bournemouth local, Stuart Henderson, 53, said he sees “antisocial behaviour” all the time.

The production planner explained that one of the most bothersome problems is the loud music that people “blast all day”.

He added: “I know people whose huts have been broken into and others which are covered in graffiti. People just don’t have respect anymore.”

Chief Superintendent Heather Dixey, LPA Commander for the BCP area, said that while the force is working to tackle the issue, there is crime and antisocial behaviour in urbanised areas.

“We also have dedicated hot spot policing foot patrols, focussed on areas where ASB and crime have been reported to us,” she added.

“The increased visibility and engagement of our officers in the town has led to a reduction in crime and ASB and has been warmly received by our communities, according to their feedback.”
