GB News descended into chaos minutes into their teatime show as tensions over the illegal migration in the UK exploded on air. On Monday (September 7), broadcaster Michelle Dewberry returned to the airwaves to discuss the latest news hitting the headlines. It didn’t take long for things to turn to illegal immigration, as she discussed the protests down in Dover and Portsmouth that took place over the weekend.
After sharing the latest updates, the 46-year-old broadcaster welcomed the founder of Turn Left Media, Curtis Daly, and author Matt Goodwin to get their thoughts live. Tensions soon arose between the pair, who debated the media’s role in the rise of anti-immigration sentiments in Britain.
First to take to the floor was Mr Curtis, who pointed out that migration fell between 2023 and 2025. He began: “What I do want to point out is that migration fell from its peak in 2023 to 2025 by 47%, so we have some reduction in immigration. But why does it feel like the anti-migrant sentiment is on the up?
“I saw an interesting argument from John Burn-Murdoch from the Financial Times, who found that before Brexit, concerns around immigration roughly tracked the level of arrivals. Yet years later, the concern about immigration has tracked tabloids. The FT did an investigation in the Daily Mail on this, but why are we seeing immigration come down, yet people are angrier about it?
“I would say, if the media’s going to talk about it all of the time, and it should talk about it, then you can see that maybe we might have a warped reality on immigration.” It was at this point that Mr Goodwin interjected in exasperation, fuming sarcastically: “It’s the media, it’s not the reality of our cities, towns and villages being completely reshaped.
“It’s a completely ridiculous argument. From the 1970s onwards, if you look at the British Election Study or any major survey, consistently over 70% of British people have said, ‘Can we bring down migration?’ because they want slower change.”
It was at this point that both guests began furiously speaking over each other as they debated on the show, forcing the presenter to intervene. She fumed: “Excuse me, don’t talk over each other.” Mr Curtis continued to talk over Ms Dewberry, demanding his co-star to address another point before she snapped: “Excuse me, you two, I am chairing this debate, not you, thank you very much.
“I will decide where this conversation goes next.” She went on to call out the Turn Left Media founder’s sniggering, adding: “I don’t know why you’re laughing because people at home need to be able to hear this conversation and if you’re both just talking over each other, it just becomes an absolute mishmash of noise. So please, one at a time.”
