Earl Spencer insists he’s ‘telling the truth’ about Charles claims
Earl Spencer made a new bombshell claim about King Charles, revealing a conversation he had with him more than 30 years ago. The late Princess Diana’s brother has been promoting his new book Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, extracts of which have been serialised online by the Daily Mail.
In the latest extract to be serialised, the Earl claimed that the King stamped his foot on the ground and behaved like a “petulant child” during a discussion about inheritance. He alleged that Charles shockingly told him that “you’re so lucky inheriting you’re so young!” when his father, John Spencer, died in 1992 and it resulted in him inheriting the Spencer estate in his twenties. The then Prince of Wales allegedly complained that his parents, in a stark contrast, the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, were treating him “like a child”.

Earl Spencer wrote: “At this he stamped his foot in emphasis. I have to say, very much like a child; and a petulant one, at that.”
John Spencer, the 8th Earl Spencer, died in 1992 and 27-year-old Charles inherited the family’s 13,000-acre estate at Althorp, Northamptonshire.
The 9th Earl Spencer now described how the King and he gathered “rather awkwardly” in Althorp’s oak-panelled tapestry sitting room.
He claimed: “I shared that I had found it so moving to see my father’s coffin being borne into the church by his six longest-serving male members of staff that I had started to cry.
“Then Prince Charles suddenly said: ‘You’re so lucky!’ I was unsure if I had heard him right. ‘I’m sorry, sir?’
“’You’re just so lucky – you know, inheriting when you’re so young!’ You’re inheriting this place in your twenties.
“’And, I mean, I’m 43…and I employ 50 people… but my parents insist on treating me like – like a child!’”
