Dragons’ Den star Duncan Bannatyne has ferociously removed his backing of Labour’s Andy Burnham. The BBC star fully supported the Mayor of Manchester until he made a discovery, which made him do a huge U-turn as he publicly withdrew his support.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Duncan reshared an article which claimed that Burnham had said that men who identify as women should be able to use female toilets. He angrily commented: “That’s it. He loses my support. Cretin.” In another statement, later, on, Duncan added: “Last week I decided to throw my support behind @AndyBurnhamGM for leadership of the Labour Party and on to PM. But I cannot do that now that I find out he says Transwomen. IE men. Should be allowed to use the ladies’ toilets. I can never support anyone that does this. Biological Women must have single sex spaces.”

A fan then commented: “I am gobsmacked that a business person like yourself would have been a Labour supporter in the first place. But well done for posting this anyway,” to which Duncan replied with a clarification on his political stance.

“I am not a Labour supporter but if we have a choice on who to support for the next PM then we should use it. I don’t support any party,” he shared.

It comes as Burnham could return to parliament if he wins the Makerfield by-election next month. The Greater Manchester mayor moved a step closer to a return to the Commons after Labour’s National Executive Committee approved his bid to stand in the upcoming Makerfield by-election.

If elected, Burnham is expected to launch a leadership challenge as pressure on Sir Keir continues to grow following Labour’s disastrous local election results.

However, the politician has faced backlash recently over his views on single-sex spaces. He said the idea that single-sex spaces should be protected for biological women was a “minority view”.

Conservatives’ equalities spokesman Claire Coutinho said Burnham was “shockingly out of touch”.

She told the Daily Mail: “Protecting the safety, dignity and privacy of women is not a minority view – it’s the law. It is a gross injustice that women have been raped in prison, lost their spots on sports podiums, or lost their jobs for stating biological sex is real.

“But that has happened because people like Andy did not think women’s rights were worth fighting for – it is shockingly out of touch.”
