Harry’s new demands are dressed up as harmony, but beneath them is a bruise that keeps getting pressed until it finally breaks someone.

A George Bernard Shaw character once said of his feckless son: “He knows nothing, and he thinks he knows everything” – he could have been discussing Prince Harry. Harry’s got a fairly substantial ego and the evidence lies in any one of the numerous TV ‘soul-searching’ interviews he has done since Megxit. The world was in chaos after Covid, yet from a sun-kissed, luxurious Californian mansion he and Meghan bemoaned their lot in life to Oprah Winfrey, or pals at the BBC or ITV or anyone frankly who would listen. When his 2023 memoir Spare came out it was even worse, as he assumed – despite the Middle-East in turmoil, the war in Ukraine and a cost-of-living crisis – that we had nothing better to do than worry over his misfortune to be born two whole years after his brother.
Now Harry has inflated his ego once more after it was reported that he wants the Palace to share the Royal Family’s diary with him, so the two camps can avoid stealing each other’s limelight. Can you imagine the sheer arrogance? Harry asking the King what he’s up to next week: “Pa you can’t visit New Zealand next week! I’m being paid to open a new Poundsaver in Droitwich!”
A source close to the Sussexes insisted the Duke never “sets out” to steal the limelight from King Charles or his brother Prince William – yet in a thinly-veiled swipe at the Firm, the insider claimed Harry needs “decent foresight” of upcoming royal events to avoid embarrassing scheduling clashes in the future.
A Sussex source told The Times that if the couple withdrew from their own events at the last minute, it would disappoint charities. They said, tellingly pointing the finger at the Palace: “He [Prince Harry] can only mitigate against clashes if information is shared with him in advance.”
There’s the arrogance. As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are not working royals, their main concern no doubt is William and Kate doing a high-profile engagement and it overshadowing some commercial, paid gig of theirs. While King Charles is on a very important and politically and historically sensitive trip to the Caribbean, the Royal Family must have been having kittens worrying if Harry and Meghan would pop up and start talking about Britain’s colonial past or something.
Instead the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will reportedly stay under the radar for the next two weeks to spend half-term with children Archie and Lilibet. It’s just a shame they can’t extend that to a few years or so.
