Andy Burnham has been blasted by Suella Braverman over his bid to reverse Brexit. The Prime Minister has admitted Labour’s next manifesto could include a second referendum or even a pledge to rejoin the EU without a vote. It comes just months after he insisted he did not want to “re-run” the Brexit rows when he was campaigning to return to Parliament in the by-election in Leave-voting Makerfield. Reform UK MP Mrs Braverman hit out at the Labour leader over his “contempt” for voters.
Speaking to the Daily Express about her new book Patriot: Empire, Betrayal, and Hope, she said: “I find him to be very disingenuous. During the Makerfield by-election, when he was seeking to win the election to come back to Parliament in Makerfield, a seat that was nearly 70% for Leave, he was asked about Brexit and he said, ‘No, I don’t want to reopen the debate, I respect the views of the 17.4 million, we’re not going back in.’

“Now, only a few months later, and he’s got his feet under the desk, and the paint hasn’t even dried, and he’s already saying, ‘No, I just said that to get elected, actually, my true beliefs are that I never agreed with Brexit, I was a Remainer all along, and I want us to go back into the EU.’
“That is disingenuous. That shows a high level of contempt with which he holds the British people. It’s not democratic. And it will be disastrous for the country. So, I think it shows his true colors, and Reform is the only party that can be relied upon to fight tooth and nail against it.”
Mrs Braverman, who was one of the Tory hardline Brexiteer “Spartans”, criticised her former party for failing to make the most of Brexit benefits during their time in power.
She said: “It’s absolutely right for our national interest to be outside of the stagnating, bureaucratic, and illegitimate, frankly, EU. However, what cannot be denied is that the last Conservative government cocked it up.
“On immigration, the Tory government failed. On regulation and coming out of the single market rules, and European Court of Justice regulations and directives, and those thousands of diktats from Brussels, the last Conservative government failed.
“We need the right government that properly believes in it.”
In his Labour conference speech, Mr Burnham claimed Brexit had done “more harm than good” and said he would set out options on the future relationship with Brussels around the time of a UK-EU summit later this year.
