Deep sadness at the passing of a long-standing colleague turned to shock in the Daily Express newsroom on Friday after Devon and Cornwall Police revealed they had launched a murder investigation into the sudden death of Ann Widdecombe. Staff past and present shared memories of the former MP and campaigner, who wrote a weekly column for the Express for two decades and was a feisty, insightful and vital presence in the paper where she instinctively reflected the hopes and fears of readers.

We know readers are also shocked and appalled at Ann’s untimely death and would like to invite you to share your own tributes, memories and thoughts on a truly unique politician whose like it’s doubtful we’ll ever see again. Whether you agreed or disagreed with Ann’s worldview, she made entertaining company in person or in the pages of the Express.

In an age when politicians often fear to say anything controversial, or trot out pre-scripted lines, Ann was fearless. A staunch advocate of free speech, even when it placed her in oppostition to colleagues, friends and the Express, she never compromsied her views or let them get in the way of friendships. And she was always happy to debate.
