Suella Braverman’s husband has defected to Reform UK in the latest boost for Nigel Farage’s party.

Rael Braverman said the Conservative Party had “become a shadow of what it once stood for” and “betrayed the trust of the British people”.

It comes after ongoing speculation that the former home secretary would jump ship.

Mrs Braverman, who is the Tory MP for Fareham and Waterlooville, denied that she would follow suit.

She said: “My husband and I have a healthy respect for each other’s independence – he doesn’t tell me how to do my job, and I don’t tell him how to pick a political party.”

Mr Braverman announced his decision to quit the Tories in a post on social media platform X.

He said: “I have left the Conservative Party because it has become a shadow of what it once stood for.

“Its incompetence and failure to deliver have betrayed the trust of the British people.

“I deeply regret that it has come to this, as there are still a handful of decent MPs trying to do the right thing.

“I believe in politics driven by conviction and a genuine commitment to serving our nation, not by empty promises and mismanagement.”

Mrs Braverman, who is on the right of the Tory Party and is known for being outspoken on issues including immigration, previously said she hoped she would not be “driven out to Reform” by her colleagues.

Speaking in August, she said her party “should not be hounding out Conservatives, right-wingers, Eurosceptics, people who want to stand up for our flag and our faith”.

Mr Braverman’s defection comes after ex-Tory minister Dame Andrea Jenkyns was last month unveiled as Reform’s candidate to be mayor of Greater Lincolnshire as the party celebrated reaching 100,000 members.

Former Boris Johnson adviser Tim Montgomerie, who founded the influential Conservative Home website, became the latest Tory to switch earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Reform passed Labour for the first time in a national opinion poll last week.
