But one development is changing the nature of the problem in a way that could have consequences far beyond the current hiring slowdown: artificial intelligence is increasingly capable of performing many of the tasks that once gave graduates their first opportunity.

What happens if companies stop hiring large numbers of inexperienced workers because technology can perform the routine work that junior employees traditionally did?

The problem is not simply that fewer graduates receive job offers. The deeper problem is that the career ladder itself could begin to disappear.

For decades, entry-level jobs served an important economic function. Employers did not necessarily expect new graduates to arrive with years of professional experience. Instead, they hired young people because they believed those employees could be trained.

A graduate might begin by researching information, preparing documents, writing basic reports, analysing straightforward data, responding to routine customer requests or assisting more experienced colleagues. These tasks were not necessarily glamorous, but they provided something enormously valuable: experience.

They can draft text, summarise documents, organise information, generate code, analyse patterns and assist with research. The technology does not need to be perfect to affect employment decisions. It only needs to be good enough for companies to decide that some tasks no longer require a human employee working on them full-time.

That creates a powerful economic incentive.

If an employer can use technology to perform routine work while retaining a smaller number of experienced employees to supervise the process, the company may conclude that it needs fewer junior workers.

From the perspective of an individual business, that decision can make sense.

From the perspective of an entire generation, however, it creates a serious problem.

Where are tomorrow’s experienced workers supposed to come from?

Every senior professional was once inexperienced.

Every experienced lawyer once had a first job.

Every senior engineer once needed somebody to teach them.

Every manager once had to learn how businesses actually operate.

Experience cannot simply be downloaded.

If companies remove too many entry-level positions, they may eventually discover that they have weakened the pipeline through which future skilled workers are created.

This is the paradox at the centre of the AI revolution.

Technology may increase productivity while simultaneously making it harder for young people to acquire the experience necessary to become productive professionals themselves.

The immediate temptation is to describe this as an argument against AI.

That would be a mistake.

Artificial intelligence is not going away. Nor should society attempt to stop technological progress simply because some jobs are changing. Previous technological revolutions also destroyed certain forms of employment while creating new ones.

The important question is not whether AI should exist.

The question is how society manages the transition.

At present, young graduates appear to be carrying a disproportionate share of the adjustment.

They are entering a labour market in which employers can be more selective, companies are under pressure to control costs and technological tools are reducing the need for some routine work.

At the same time, many graduates are being told that they need experience before they can get their first job.

That creates an almost impossible circle.

You need experience to get a job.

You need a job to obtain experience.

And if employers are increasingly unwilling to provide that first opportunity, young people have nowhere to begin.

The consequences could extend far beyond individual careers.

A difficult graduate labour market can affect housing, family formation, financial independence and social mobility. Young adults who cannot establish stable careers may remain dependent on their parents for longer. Those without family wealth or professional connections may face an even greater disadvantage.

This creates a particularly serious problem for social mobility.

Historically, entry-level employment provided one of the main ways that people could enter professional occupations without already having wealthy or influential families.

A young person could graduate, find a junior role, demonstrate their ability and gradually move upwards.

If companies increasingly recruit only people who already possess professional experience, the system risks becoming more dependent on connections.

Those who already have access to internships, professional networks and financially supportive families may find ways into the workforce.

Those without those advantages may struggle.

AI could therefore unintentionally strengthen existing inequalities.

There is another issue that deserves attention.

Companies may believe that replacing junior employees with AI is simply an efficiency improvement. But junior employees do more than complete tasks.

They ask questions.

They challenge assumptions.

They notice problems.

They learn the culture of an organisation.

They develop relationships with colleagues and customers.

They bring perspectives that more experienced employees may overlook.

Most importantly, they become tomorrow’s experienced employees.

A business that removes junior hiring may improve its short-term costs while weakening its long-term talent pipeline.

This is why the current decline in graduate employment should not be treated as just another temporary economic statistic.

It could represent a structural change in how professional careers begin.

The old model was relatively simple.

Education was followed by entry-level employment, which was followed by experience, responsibility and promotion.

The emerging model could look very different.

Companies may hire a smaller number of highly experienced workers while using AI to handle much of the routine work that once provided training opportunities for newcomers.

If that happens, young people may have to find entirely different ways to acquire professional experience.

Universities could become more important.

Apprenticeships could become more important.

Work placements could become more important.

Employers may need to create structured training programmes specifically designed for an AI-assisted workplace.

The definition of a graduate job may also have to change.

Instead of hiring young workers simply to perform repetitive tasks, companies could hire them to work alongside AI, verify its outputs, investigate unusual problems and develop new applications for the technology.

That would require a different kind of graduate.

The most valuable employee may not be the person who can produce the fastest first draft.

AI can already do that.

The valuable employee may be the person who knows whether the draft is correct.

They may understand context, identify errors, communicate with clients, exercise judgement and make decisions when the technology produces an uncertain answer.

In other words, AI could increase the value of human judgement even while reducing the value of routine human labour.

But young workers cannot develop that judgement without opportunities to practise it.

That is why employers have a responsibility that extends beyond quarterly profits.

Businesses need to think about where their future workforce will come from.

If every company decides that someone else should train the next generation, eventually nobody will do the training.

Governments also have a role.

Education policy cannot simply encourage ever larger numbers of young people to obtain degrees while assuming that professional employment will automatically follow.

Universities, employers and governments need to reconsider how young people acquire practical skills.

Apprenticeships, paid placements, vocational education and structured early-career programmes may become increasingly important.

The goal should not be to protect every traditional entry-level task from automation.

It should be to protect the opportunity to learn.

That distinction is crucial.

AI should be allowed to eliminate boring work.

It should be allowed to make businesses more productive.

It should be allowed to help employees perform tasks more efficiently.

But society should be extremely cautious about allowing technology to eliminate the first rung of the career ladder without creating another way for young people to climb it.

The current graduate jobs crisis is therefore about more than unemployment.

It is about the future structure of working life.

If today’s graduates cannot get their first opportunity, tomorrow’s economy may face a shortage of experienced professionals.

The irony would be profound.

Companies could become more technologically advanced while becoming less capable of developing human talent.

AI could make businesses faster, but the workforce could become less experienced.

Productivity could rise while social mobility falls.

And young people could find themselves increasingly educated but increasingly excluded from the professional world they were trained to enter.

That is not an inevitable outcome.

AI can become a powerful tool for workers rather than simply a replacement for them.

But achieving that future will require businesses to recognise that employment is not merely about completing today’s tasks.

It is also about developing tomorrow’s talent.

The graduate entering the office today may not be immediately productive.

But with training, mentoring and experience, that person could become one of the company’s most valuable employees.

If AI removes the opportunity to begin, there may be nobody left to develop.

The biggest danger of the AI revolution may therefore not be that machines take every job.

It may be that machines take enough of the first jobs to prevent an entire generation from gaining the experience needed for the jobs that come later.

That is the problem Britain must confront now.

The future of work should not be a world in which only experienced people can get experience.

AI may transform the workplace.

But society must make sure that it does not close the door behind the generation trying to enter it.
