Drivers over 70 hit with £1,000 fine warning over simple 3-minute check

Drivers over the age of 70 face fines of £1,000 for failing to make a simple check. It is free to do and takes just three minutes, with motorists urged to make sure they don’t get caught out.

To drive in the UK, motorists need a valid driving licence which must be renewed every 10 years, costing £14 for most people while those over 70 renew for free. You can check when your licence is up for renewal online, with the process taking place within minutes. Meanwhile, drivers can also send a D1 form to renew by post or renew at a Post Office branch which costs slightly more at £21.50.

The RAC warns: “Photocard driving licences were introduced in 1998 and must be replaced every 10 years. The expiry date of the driving licence photocard if found in section 4b on the front of the card (which is the side that has the photo of the driver).

“If your driving licence has expired or the details on it are incorrect then you risk a fine of up to £1,000. So, it’s important to check your licence and renew it if you change your name or move to a new address.”

They add: “The cost to renew your driving licence is £14 and will need to be paid using a MasterCard, Visa, Electron, or Delta credit or debit card.

“If you are over the age of 70, then it is free to renew your driving licence.

“For drivers renewing at a Post Office in person, the cost is £21.50. Applying by post will cost £17, and the D1 packs will be available from the DVLA website.”

If you renew online, you should receive your licence within seven days. Those renewing by post or at the Post Office can expect a wait of up to three weeks.

However, you can legally drive while you are waiting to receive your new physical licence. As well as a fine of £1,000 drivers getting behind the wheel without a valid licence face between three and six penalty points.
