Sky News was interrupted as it was announced that former England footballer and manager Kevin Keegan has died aged 75. In January, Keegan’s family shared he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer. In June, Keegan confirmed was battling stage four cancer – the most advanced form of the disease. Presenter Sarah-Jane Mee was discussing Andy Burnham’s conversation with US President Donald Trump when the breaking update came in.
She told viewers: “We’ll take a pause there. I just want to bring to those of you watching this afternoon some breaking news, the very sad news that former England captain and manager Kevin Keegan has died. Kevin Keegan’s family have just released this statement, saying ‘it is with immense sadness that we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75.'”
The Sky News broadcaster said that Keegan was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments.
She added: “Kevin, a double Ballon d’Or winner, was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather. The family would like to thank Kevin’s incredible medical team for all of their support.
“This is a hugely difficult time and they are requesting space and privacy.”
The presenter went on: “He revealed around a month or so ago that he had stage four cancer. Incredibly sad news and we will be reflecting on the life of Kevin Keegan throughout the day here on Sky News. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
Announcing his stage four diagnosis last month, Keegan said: “They said we have a top doctor with this new way of fighting what you have got. Which is stage four cancer. He was a Liverpool supporter so I went to meet him. I knew I wouldn’t be walking alone, if you know what I mean.”

Keegan admitted in January that he had endured a “really tough time” after being left confined to his bed at times due to his illness.
He is regarded as one of the best players of his generation and enjoyed a successful playing career between 1968 and 1984.
As a coach, he managed 273 matches at Newcastle in two separate spells, almost taking them to Premier League glory in the 1990s when they finished second twice.
Paying tribute to Keegan on X, Newcastle wrote: “We are devastated to learn of the passing of Kevin Keegan, one of the most iconic, influential and deeply loved figures in our club’s history. Kevin was more than a legendary footballer and manager. He was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters.”
